Abstract

Folktales which have developed in community are not merely an empty space that has not any sense. Folktales are the representation of the ideas of the community as the owner. Therefore, the folktales could be used as a means to understand a way of thinking of the community supporters. Based on the background, this research aims to: 1) describe the content of disaster in the Pacitan folktales; 2) outline the disaster mitigation system in the Pacitan folktales. The sources of data are the folktales told by informants. While, the research data are in the forms of words, sentences, and discourses. In addition to the unwritten stories as sources of data, this study also uses written data as supporting research data. The data are collected by means of: 1) observation; 2) recording; 3) note taking; and 4) interviewing. The data are analized using content analysis techniques. Based on the folktales spread in the district of Pacitan, disaster can be grouped into: 1)natural disasters, such as landslides, drought, and plant pests; 2) non-natural disasters, namely plague and famine. While, the disaster mitigation in the legend in Pacitan is done by: 1) disaster anticipation, by way of friendly and respect to nature; 3)faccing disaster by utilizing nature and pray or invoke God for forgiveness.
