Abstract

ABSTRACT Wisnu Ariyani. THE STUDY OF ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ AND CANDACE OWENS’ IDEOLOGY ON WOMEN’S ABORTION THROUGH CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS FRAMEWORK. Thesis. English Education Study Program STKIP PGRI Pacitan. Hidden ideology is found in every utterance by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Candace Owens in response to the abortion problem. The objectives of this research are: (a) to explore the discourses concerned with race findings; and (b) to reveal the ideological representation of speaker’s thoughts. In addition, the importance of this research is to provide knowledge about the impact of abortion on the human relationship with himself, with other humans, and with God. The researcher and the reader will not realize how public figures’ speeches contain hidden intentions in responding to issues to gain public trust. This research used a descriptive qualitative method of critical discourse analysis to analyze the phenomenon. The researcher got data based on video transcripts from the speeches of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Candace Owens on YouTube. Data analysis used Spradley’s analysis (1980) and ideological types by Eccleshall, et al., (2003) and Heywood (2021). Spradley’s analysis consists of (a) domain analysis, (b) taxonomy analysis, (c) componential analysis, and (d) analysis of cultural themes. Further, the types of ideology are liberalism, conservatism, socialism, nationalism, fascism, ecologism, feminism, anarchism, populism, multiculturalism, and fundamentalism. Then, triangulation was carried out to establish credibility and dependability in this research. As a result of this research there were 44 utterances representing the ideology of the speaker’s race. The speech explains that the Caucasoid race adheres to the ideologies of liberalism (63%), socialism (29%), and feminism (8%). Meanwhile, the Negroid race adheres to conservatism (80%) and feminism (20%). Based on the results of in-depth component analysis, it was concluded that the Caucasoid race has a discourse focus, including support for abortion, rejecting oppression, rejecting patriarchy, and supporting LGBT rights. Whereas the Negroid race is more focused on rejecting abortion, fighting for historical truth, and rejecting patriarchy. In addition, the dominant Caucasoid race adheres to the ideology of liberalism because it strongly adheres to freedom. Meanwhile, Negroid has a tendency towards ideology of conservatism. Where, thoughts and attitudes often refer to historical truth values, believe in strong cultural values, and are more careful about the allure of freedom.
