Abstract

ABSTRACT Purwatiningsih. An Analysis of Figurative Language Used in Westlife Songs Lyric of “Spectrum” Album. Thesis. Advisor 1: Dr.Agustina Sri Hafidah, M.Pd. B.I. Advisor II: Hasan Khalawi, M.Pd. English Education Study Program, Teacher Training, and Education College. STKIP PGRI Pacitan. 2020 The objectives of the study were to find out the figurative language used in Westlife songs lyric of the “Spectrum” album and to know the contextual meaning in songs lyric of the Westlife of spectrum album. Westlife is the most popular band from Sligo, Ireland. They have gone on to sell over 45 million records album worldwide. The researcher used Potter and Keraf principles as a theory of kinds of figurative language and Pateda theory of analyzed the contextual meaning. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The source of data was songs lyric of Westlife of Spectrum album which consisted of eleven songs. To collect the data, the researcher has used documentation and taking notes techniques. The technique of analysis data, the researcher analyzed the data trough classifying, analyzing and identifying, and making conclusions. Based on the research finding, the researcher finds many kinds of figurative language revealed as follow: The frequency of each type of figurative language was Westlife was 4% simile type, 50% metaphor type, 22% hyperbole type, 7% personification type, 7% pleonasm type, 6% repetition type, 2% rhetoric and 2 % paradox. Based on the result, the most frequent is a metaphor. The contextual meaning is about romantic, sadness, and motivation. Therefore, it is suggested for the teachers or students to use the song to carry out the teaching and learning to get fun activity and improved English mastery.
