Abstract

This research aimed to know whether the application of semantics mapping can improve students` vocabulary mastery in the seventh-grade students of MTs N 1 Pacitan in academic year of 2021/2022. This research also aimed to know the students` responses toward the application of semantics mapping to teaching vocabulary. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was conducted in 2 cycles. This research was conducted at MTs N 1 Pacitan. The research subjects were students of the 7B class consisting of 32 students. The researcher used the purposive sampling method to determine the sample. The data was obtained from the students` tests, observations, and questionnaires. The results of the test are analyzed by using the quantitative method, while the results of the observation and questionnaire are analyzed by using the quantitative method. The indicator of success is the average score of students has reached the minimum criteria of completeness (75). Then, positive responses from students are also used as indicators of the success of this research. The results of the students` tests showed an improvement in students` average scores. The students got an average score of 54.5 on the pre-test, 67 on post-test 1, and 78 on post-test 2. In observation, Students who pay attention improved by 7%, students who were active improved by 22%, students who were enthusiasts improved by 22%, and the number of students who faced difficulties decreased by 25%. Then, from the questionnaire, there are 27.3% of respondents strongly agree and 72.7% agree that their interests were improved. Then, there are 18.2% of respondents strongly agree, 77.3% agree, and 4.5% disagree that semantics mapping helps them to learn vocabulary. Next, 18.2% of respondents strongly agree and 81.8% agree that their motivation was increased. And then, there are 18.2% of respondents strongly agree, 77.3% agree, and 4.5% disagree that their activeness was improved. And, there are 18.2% of respondents strongly agree, 72,7% agree, and 9,1% disagree that semantics mapping increases their creativity.
