Abstract

ABSTRACT Alafa Mahmudah. AN ANALYSIS OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS (HOTS) TO THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SDN 1 NGLARAN IN ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2023/2024. Thesis. Pacitan: STKIP PGRI Pacitan, 2024. The research aimed: 1) To analyze the implementation of HOTS strategy 2) To analyze the teachers’ obstacles towards the implementation of the HOTS strategy. 3) To analyze advantages and disadvantages of the HOTS strategy for the fifth grade in the academic years of 2023/2024 especially English lesson. The subjects of this research consisted of a principal, an English teacher, and nine students in the fifth grade. The research used qualitative research with a descriptive method. The research instruments were interview, observation, and documentation. The process used three data analysis techniques: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results showed that there are three steps in implementation of higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in class, namely: First, the learning preparation stage, with creating teaching modules aimed at C4/C5/C6 competencies, preparing material and learning media, determining learning strategies and methods, and informing students about necessary preparations. Second, the learning implementation stage, which utilizes the cooperative learning method, project-based learning (PBL) method, and problem-solving method. Third, learning evaluation stage, incorporating HOTS elements in assessment or quiz to measure students’ critical thinking, analytical, and decision-making skills. However, in the practice of implementing high-order thinking skills strategies, there are several obstacles, including difficulty in implementing the HOTS concept in elementary schools, limited materials specifically designed for HOTS, the curriculum often changes, limited study time in class, teacher readiness varies, and students have difficulty adapting. The advantages of the HOTS strategy include enhanced critical thinking, improved English performance, increased student interest in learning English, and the development of English language skills. Meanwhile, the disadvantages of this strategy are longer learning times, some students feel stressed by the HOTS approach because of the unfamiliarity of the assignments among students, and a heavy workload for teachers. Keywords: English Lesson, Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), Implementation, Teacher Strategy.
