Abstract

Recently, a shift of the modern life recalls the legendary and nostalgic traditional ceremony the so-called Badut Sinampurna–a clown–traditional ceremony in Ploso Village, Nawangan Sub-district, Pacitan Regency, East Java Province. It is kind of Ruwatan–a Javanese traditional ceremony. The uniqueness of such Badut Sinampurna is the media used for ruwatan; that is kupluk–skullcaps–inherited since a half centuries ago. More importantly, Badut Sinampurna has a mantra and dramatic behavior played by two clowns who act as dukun and Kala. Therefore, referring to the aforementioned issues, this research aims at revealing the local wisdom value in both mantra and dramatic elements of the Badut Sinampurna traditional ceremony. Furthermore, the problem of this research is the form of mantra and dramatic elements as well as the local wisdom of the Badut Sinampurna. The qualitative research is employed to explore the subsurface of the dimension. Moreover, the data collection method uses observation, interview, recording, and recording techniques. Finally, the content analysis method is employed for the analysis to unearth the meaning totality In conformity with the research findings, it can be concluded that the mantra forms in Badut Sinampurna were in the form of free poetry. Besides, the tension, fear, and surprise are visible in the dramatic elements of the Badut Sinampurna traditional ceremony. Then, the local pearls of wisdom revealed from the mantra are such as being calm in facing problems, upholding noble customs, trust, surrender to God Almighty, and prioritizing justice. Finally, from the dramatic element aspect, the revealed local wisdom is musayawarah mufakat –a consensus agreement –as the best way to overcome problems and maintain harmony as well as nature preservation.
