Abstract

This research aims to analyze students’ grammatical errors in constructing cause and effect essays, to know the most dominant errors occurred, and to know how students response toward the using of WPS Office media in constructing cause and effect essays at the third grade students of SMKN Ngadirojo. The subjects of this study consisted of 25 students of class XII Accounting II. This research used qualitative research, with descriptive method. The research instruments were writing test sheet, questionnaire sheet, interview sheet, observation guideline, and mobile phone. To analyze errors, errors were collected, identified and classified according to the Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay. Researchers also distributed questionnaire, conducted interview, and observation to know how students response toward the using of WPS Office media in constructing cause and effect essays. The result of the research showed that there are 197 total errors devided from 80 omission errors (41%), 13 addition errors (6.5%), 93 misformation errors (47%), and 11 misordering errors (5.5%). The most dominant error was misformation errors with 93 errors (47%). The results also showed very positive students response toward the using of WPS Office media as a new technology for them in constructing cause and effect essays. Where students who initially never use this media to write, in the end they become motivated, and will develop their writing. The results also showed a very positive student response to the use of WPS Office media as a new technology for them in constructing cause and effect essays where students who initially never used this media to learn English, especially in writing essays, after they used this media to write essays, they are more motivated to write on WPS Office media than on paper. They also think that by using this media they take advantage of existing technology, especially in writing. In addition, students also feel more enthusiastic in their writing by using this media, especially in constructing cause and effect essays. Keywords: Grammatical, Error, Essay, WPS Office
