Abstract

Contact between languages in bilingual or multilingual society, including people of Indonesia, causing interlanguage interaction cannot be avoided. Language assimilation brought by the speakers causes language events, one of which is a mixed-language code in the life of a society, as happened in the south coast of Pacitan. Pacitan is a remarkable fish producer. Economic, livelihood, and the existence become the reason for the fishermen from outside of Pacitan to move to Pacitan, East Java, either to settle temporarily or to be a native (live forever). This study is focused on the use of language in both local fishermen communities and those who come from outside of Pacitan (Bugis Makassar fishermen) that interact in a fishing communities. The aim of this research is to identify and explain the occurrence of code-mixing in Pacitan fishermen communities, both in terms of the role, diversity and the desire of speakers and interpret the kinds of mixed codes that appear in the interaction. The result of this study indicates that the code-mixing that occurs in fishermen communities in Teleng Ria Beach Pacitan laid on social grounds, registrar, and educational reasons. The types of code mixing which are found in the fishermen communities are (1) inner code-mixing); (2) outer code-mixing. The language assimilation made by the speakers of the language and cultural backgrounds lead to codemixing in the language that is used by themselves. Makassar Bugis ishermen often interact with mixing Javanese, Bugis Makassar, and Indonesian. And the local Javanese fishermen also do the mixing of language use, although the use of Bugis Makassar is in smaller percentage. The reason for the existence, being easy to socialize, and in order to be accepted by the local people become Bugis Makassar fishermen’s reason to mix languages. While respecting the Bugis Makassar fishermen is the reason of the Pacitan local fishermen which are also found use the language of the Bugis Makassar in small in quantities. Thus, it is real that language cannot be separated from the surrounding culture. Language has been able to glue the kinship between speakers of differ rent tribes, customs, and language. Language that is spoken kindly will bring positive effects to the surrounding environment, including migrants, so that a culture of mutual respect towards each role can be maintained by the power of language.
