Abstract
ABSTRACT Ani Novitasari. IMPROVING STUDENTS WRITING SKILLS BY USING THE FOUR-SQUARE WRITING METHOD OF THE TENTH-GRADE STUDENTS SMKN 2 PACITAN IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023. Thesis. Pacitan: STKIP PGRI PACITAN, 2023. This research aims: (1) to find out the process of applying the four-square writing method in improving student's writing skills in class X AKL 4 SMKN 2 Pacitan for the 2022/2023 academic year; (2) to find out that applying the four-square writing method can improve students’ writing skills in class X AKl 4 SMKN 2 Pacitan for the 2022/2023 academic year; and (3) to find out that the application of the four-square writing method can increase student enthusiasm during teaching and learning activities taking place in class in class X AKL 4 SMKN 2 Pacitan for the 2022/2023 academic year. This is a classroom action research (CAR) carried out in 2 cycles. This research was conducted at SMKN 2 Pacitan. The subject of this research was class X AKL 4 SMKN 2 Pacitan which consisted of 32 students. In collecting data researcher used tests, observations, and questionnaires. In analyzing the data, the researcher used two methods, namely the quantitative method to analyze student test results, and the qualitative method to analyze observations and questionnaires. Indicators of success are based on the average value of students who achieve standards of completeness (75). The positive responses from students were also used in determining indicators of success in this study. The students' tests showed an improvement in students' average scores. The students got an average score of 64 on the pre-test, 69 on post-test 1, and 78 on post-test 2. In observations, students who paid attention improved by 3%, active students improved by 10%, enthusiasm improved by 38%, and students who faced difficulties decreased by 25%. Then from the questionnaires, 53.1% of respondents agree, and 46.9% disagree that learning the English language was difficult. Then, 75% of students agree, and 25% of students disagree that writing descriptive text was a difficult skill. Next, 87.5% of students agree, and 16.5% of students disagree that the four-square writing method was an alternative media to teaching writing descriptive text. And then, 93.8% of students agree, and 6.2% of students disagree that learning descriptive text using the four-square writing method could improve their enthusiasm.
