Abstract
ABSTRACT Clara Dyastuti Suyatno. The Representation of Masculine Women in “The Woman King” Movie By Gina Prince-Bythewood (Semiotic Analysis). Thesis. English Education English Program STKIP PGRI PACITAN. The representation of feminine women in cinema has been a common motif throughout history. However, the portrayal of strong and assertive women, who challenge traditional gender norms, is rarely encountered. This research focuses on exploring the representation of masculine women in the movie "The Woman King," directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, through the lens of John Fiske's semiotics. The aim of this study is twofold: first, to explore and analyze the representation of masculine women in "The Woman King," and second, to apply John Fiske's semiotics as an analytical framework to dissect the representation of these characters in the movie. This research contributes to a more complex and diverse portrayal of gender roles in cinema, challenging traditional norms, and empowering female audiences. It highlights the importance of understanding semiotics in shaping perceptions and challenging social norms surrounding gender representation. By spotlighting the representation of strong and resilient women in the movie, this research aims to inspire and encourage further exploration of gender representation in the cinematic world. This research employed qualitative methods with a semiotic analysis approach to understand how the movie constructs the identity of masculine women. The research method involves in-depth observation of the movie and identification of semiotic elements that shape the representation of masculine women. The analysis will focus on signs, meanings, and interpretations within the movie's context, examining dialogue, actions, visuals, symbols, and other elements to understand how the characters are constructed. The findings from the analysis reveal that "The Woman King" successfully portrays masculine women characters in a multifaceted and empowering manner. The main character, Naniska, as the General of Aogojie, exemplifies traits traditionally associated with masculinity, including assertiveness, courage, and tactical intelligence. Additionally, the Aogojie warriors as a whole challenge gender stereotype, emphasizing the diverse expressions of femininity, and dispelling the notion that certain traits are exclusive to men.
