Abstract

ABSTRACT Muhammad Hafid Ahsan. EVALUATING THE MOVIE ENTITLED “THE MARTIAN” USING HUMANISTIC APPROACH. Thesis. English Education Study Program STKIP PGRI Pacitan. 2023. Watching is an activity that, besides providing knowledge, can also give satisfaction to the audience. One means of exciting and educational viewing can also be a medium for conveying messages that provide experience in sound, writing, and movie images. Movies consist of many genres and types adapted to the theme that will be raised in the film. So watching movies will provide entertainment and broaden and sharpen our view of world developments. One of the most highlighted parts of the film is the message or meaning contained therein. Referring to the statement above, this research focuses on studying the movie entitled “THE MARTIAN,” viewed from a humanistic approach, and the hidden values found in the “THE MARTIAN” movie. This research used descriptive qualitative research. Qualitative research is concerned with the opinion, experiences, and feelings of individuals producing subject data Description research is related to the analysis of the natural and empirical phenomena of the community in daily life. Then the data sources are significant so that research produces the proper understanding of conclusions. The primary data are from movies and scripts of films. Supporting The supporting data would to take from other resources such as some collections or critical books, magazines, journals, and bibliographies available on the internet. The technique of collecting data in this research was the used documentary technique to collect data. Documentation techniques which the researcher tried to find the data needed, such as notes, transcripts, newspapers, books, magazines, and so on. The researcher analyzed the Truth, Message, and Beliefs of “The Martian” movie by recording the relevant dialogues in a paper. In this case, the researcher uses the theory of Miles and Huberman, which consists of data reduction, data display, and data conclusion. Finally, the researcher makes a verification conclusion about the results of the data analysis. From the aspect of truth, curiosity is the main trigger for change, and we should be wiser in dealing with all things that arise. In the second aspect, challenges and obstacles always come through, and it is better if you keep going even with all the limitations. Then in the last element, behind whatever results have been achieved, some sacrifices must have gone through a long and winding process. That’s where the unity, solidarity, and courage is.
