Abstract

This research aims 1) to find out the types of pronunciation errors made by the tenth TBG students of SMKN 3 Pacitan, 2) to describe the most dominant pronunciation errors, 3) to find out the causes of students’ pronunciation errors. This research identified students' pronunciation in pronouncing words containing silent letters /c/, /d/, /e/ and /t/. This research used a descriptive qualitative research design. The research subject was students in the tenth TBG of SMKN 3 Pacitan. The techniques used to collect the data are recording, questionnaire and observation. The primary data source in this research was the recording of students in reading 32 words containing silent letter /c/, /d/, /e/ and /t/. The techniques used to analyze the data are data reduction, data display, and drawing the conclusion. The result showed that there were 375 pronunciation errors made by the tenth TBG students. The number of pronunciation errors in the silent letter "c" is 158 errors or about 42%. The error in the silent letter "d" is 52 errors or about 14%. The error in the silent letter "e" is 64 errors or about 17%. While the error in the silent letter "t" is 101 errors or about 27%. The most dominant student pronunciation error is in the silent letter "c". In addition, there are four causes of students' pronunciation errors: students’ difficulty in English vocabulary mastery, students’ lack of understanding of pronunciation, the differences between spelling and pronunciation in English, and students’ lack of motivation to learn pronunciation.
